"Les plus beaux voyages sont ceux que l'on fait en rêve", écrivait Paul Morand, mais j'espérais malgré tout que certains rêves pouvaient coïncider avec la réalité et mon rêve à moi, c'était la Vallée de la Mort. Je ne connaissais d'elle que son nom dramatique et quelques images du vieux photographe américain Ansel Adams. Je la savais quelque part dans le désert entre la Sierra Nevada et Las Vegas. Au fil des années, j'avais cristallisé sur elle toutes mes envies de fuite, de retrouvailles avec moi-même et de découverte de l'inconnu.

En 1978, à l'âge de 45 ans, à un instant de la vie où il est souvent question de faire le point, Jeanloup Sieff, photographe célèbre, réputé pour ses nus, ses images de mode et ses portraits de célébrités, sortait un livre mythique rapidement épuisé, jamais réédité. La terre craquelée, les rides dessinées par le vent, les dunes inviolées, les ciels lourds, révélés par des noirs intenses et des cadrages sobres, volontairement en retrait, forment un ensemble étrange à la limite du fantastique. La Vallée de la Mort relate ce voyage, entrepris avec sa femme Barbara en camping-car, dans une nouvelle version.
