La série « Thing » de Jungjin Lee se compose d’œuvres capturant des objets du quotidien en gros plan intime, imprimés en noir et blanc sur du papier artisanal coréen. À travers un processus photographique méditatif, l’artiste distille l’essence du sujet, en éliminant tout élément superflu. Arrière-plans et ombres disparaissent, les formes se simplifient, tandis que les espaces vides se chargent des émotions et des pensées intérieures de l’artiste. En particulier, les espaces blancs entourant chaque objet sombre reflètent le concept de « vide » issu de la peinture et de la calligraphie orientales. Grâce à cet espace blanc, les objets acquièrent une nouvelle signification. Lee interroge le rôle de l’artiste dans l’exploration et l’expression de l’essence de l’existence par l’observation.

Cette série occupe une place unique et singulière dans l’œuvre de l’artiste, généralement composée de paysages. La vitalité de la série « Thing », restée inchangée pendant 20 ans, se métamorphose aujourd’hui en un objet élégant grâce au hanji (papier artisanal coréen) et aux techniques traditionnelles de reliure à la main.
