Cet ouvrage marque l'aboutissement de la série au long cours de Matt Black, démarrée en 2013. Le photographe de l'agence Magnum a parcouru les États-Unis, sur près de 160 000 km, dressant un état des lieux sans concession de l'Amérique d'aujourd'hui en s'intéressant plus particulièrement à ces villes périphériques et à la précarité du quotidien, à travers des images fortes en N&B méticuleusement composées.
Ce qui avait commencé comme une histoire sur des communautés isolées est devenu, au fil des ans, le portrait d’un pays de plus en plus divisé où se multiplient les inégalités et disparités. Terminée en 2020, après la visite du dernier état, cette série est accompagnée du carnet de voyage de l’artiste où se mêlent ses notes personnelles et des collections d’objets trouvés.
