Gumsucker déplore la perte de la nature sauvage australienne face à une civilisation qui ne cesse de progresser, domestiquant aussi bien le territoire que l'esprit. C'est une sorte d'histoire de fantômes, peuplée de vestiges en déclin et d'âmes solitaires. Son titre, emprunté à un terme archaïque désignant autrefois les Australiens d'origine européenne nés sur le sol australien, évoque également "The Gumsucker’s Dirge" (La complainte du Gumsucker), un poème du XIXe siècle pleurant la disparition de la nature sauvage à mesure que la frontière reculait et que le rêve d'une terre vierge devenait de plus en plus inaccessible.

Les images de Rory King dépeignent un paysage marqué par l'abandon, tout en exprimant une aspiration à une connexion profonde face à l'isolement. Ce sont des photographies empreintes de solitude, mais qui recèlent, en leurs marges, chaleur et lien humain. Une forme de résistance s'y manifeste : une lutte et une résilience face à la désillusion de la modernité. À travers son regard patient, l'objectif de King saisit inconnus, compagnons et nature brute dans une même étreinte empreinte de tendresse.
