Il y a un siècle et demi, Hashimoto Shoko a photographié des musiciennes aveugles, appelées les Goze (en Japonais, prononcé comme "rosé"). Elles partaient en tournées et jouaient dans les régions rurales, le long de la Mer du Japon.

Les gozes se rendaient dans des fermes et, la journée, chantaient une courte chanson sur la mélodie de shamisens. Quant au soir, elles chantaient des chansons de différentes durées, comme des chansons narratives pour les villageois présents. Elles étaient récompensées par du riz, d'autres récoltes et de l'argent.

Hashimoto a suivi avec son appareil trois goze agées au début des années 1970, sur la durée des quatres saisons : printemps, été, automne, hiver. A cette époque là, il n'existait déjà quasi plus de Goze; le développement industriel et urbain du Japon ayant mené le declin de l'agriculture et des populations rurales, en impactant directement leur mode de vie.

Cette publication est une réimpression de tous les articles sur les Goze photographiées par Hashimoto, originellement publiés dans l'Asahi Graph, un magazine hedbomadaire japonais.

Cette réimpression comprend des traductions en anglais pour tous les articles et un essai supplémentaire écrit par Hasegawa Hiroshi.
