Sans lieu ni date, les polaroïds de Thomas Dhellemmes retracent les routes empruntées à l’envie depuis deux décennies. Tanzanie, Cap-Vert, Maroc, Japon... Partout, il guette à juste distance les scènes touchées par la grâce que sauvegardent ses instantanés flous. Mis de côté aussitôt pris, ils referont plus tard surface, cette fois mêlés à d’autres, a priori sans rapport. La greffe prend, et malgré la suture post-découpe lézardant l’image finale, le charme opère. Ces associations libres sont parfois laborieuses : en témoignent les couches successives formant ça et là un demi-mille-feuille, épais comme le stock des souvenirs. Éternel insatisfait, Thomas Dhellemmes supprime ce qu’il rechigne à montrer, évinçant des annales les passages encombrants, les détails inutiles, avant de scanner le résidu des choses, pour finir, agrandies. Ces étapes, elles-aussi, font partie du voyage dont le carnet étrange, tenu à domicile, fait le tri parmi les visions vraies ayant, au bout du compte, chacune leur part de faux.
