Great Leaps Forward dévoile une série de photos tirées d'un sac en plastique acheté dans un marché aux puces de Pékin en 2016. Scellé hermétiquement avec un noeud, le sac est resté au même endroit sans qu'on s'en aperçoive pendant des décennies. Ce sont plus de 300 photos qui sont découvertes à l'ouverture du sac, prises par un membre anonyme du département de photographie de l'Université d'éducation physique de Xi'an. Toutes les images, représentant méticuleusement divers athlètes en action, souvent défiant la gravité, ont été immortalisées sur le même terrain par une journée ensoleillée de juin 1960.
À ce jour, ces images sont les seuls documents photographiques que le collectionneur et artiste Thomas Sauvin a trouvés de l'époque du Grand Bond en avant (1958-1962). Au cours de ces années, une campagne d'industrialisation chaotique destinée à assurer le passage d'une économie agraire à un régime communiste enraciné dans l'industrie et la production agricole à grande échelle a conduit à la famine la plus meurtrière de l'histoire humaine. Toute documentation photographique de ces années est extrêmement rare.
