Les cheveux d'une personne peuvent être comparés au sommet d'une montagne. Mais alors que le sommet des montagnes est souvent caché de nos yeux par les nuages qui les entourent, le sommet d'une personne est presque toujours visible, en particulier sous les latitudes qui ont renoncé à l'usage quotidien de bonnets, chapeaux et foulards. D'où la pression naturellement forte qui s'exerce sur la tête des gens pour qu'ils se coiffent bien. Pendant plusieurs décennies, le photographe Peter Gaechter a réalisé une large gamme de coiffures pour la coiffeuse zurichoise Elsässer Pour Dames, en suivant l'évolution et la renaissance des coiffures dans la Suisse de la fin du XXe siècle. La présente publication rassemble une sélection de ses photographies tirées des catalogues exposés dans ces salons haut de gamme, montrant les dernières tendances en matière de coiffure des années 1970 aux années 1990. Ces coupes et coiffures sculpturales, qui devaient être reproduites à l'identique sur la tête des clients, étaient également des signes révélateurs de l'époque. Que ce soit une coupe punk ou "Cold War Kids", un brushing "cinq doigts", des ailes plumeuses "Charlie's Angels" ou une coiffure "Old Hollywood", les multiples coiffures des beautés locales, des "It girls" et des actrices présentées dans ce livre reflètent le "pourquoi pas" whateverism de la culture de consommation libérale ainsi que les changements concrets de la société, par exemple l'apparition soudaine d'un téléphone portable encombrant inclus dans le cadre de l'image en tant qu'accessoire coupé par un lutin.

Les photographies de Gaechter remontent également à une époque où la photographie était encore imprégnée d'un esprit de professionnalisme. Il n'y a pas d'instantanés ici, pas d'affections d'une esthétique amateur, pas d'éléments stratégiquement trash - les photos de Gaechter visent une clientèle qui aspire à la distinction, comme on pourrait dire aussi du métier de photographe.
