Garry Winogrand a réalisé les photographies de ce livre au rebours de cette auto-évaluation. Un esprit aimant charge et élève chaque image en parcourant un circuit émotionnel qui va de l’empathie à l’affection jusqu’à l’exaltation pure et simple, s’étendant sur deux décennies de travail fait principalement en plein jour, dans la rue, sur la route, à la plage, le tout en couleur.

Garry Winogrand est surtout connu pour sa photographie de rue spontanée et énergique en noir et blanc. Ce qui est moins connu est que Gary Winogrand a également pris plus de 45000 diapositives couleur entre le début des années 1950 et la fin des années 1960. Ces photographies ont souvent été prises entre deux commandes, lorsque le photographe, travaillant seul, a développé et affiné une approche de son médium de plus en plus ouverte, indépendante et radicale. Il photographie régulièrement avec deux appareils photo attachés autour de son cou, l’un chargé de film couleur, l’autre en noir et blanc ; édité par Michael Almereyda et Susan Kismaric.
