Au cours des années 1960, Gênes a connu un processus de transformation radicale, dû à la reconstruction suite aux bombardements subis pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et à l'euphorie liée au boom économique. Lisetta Carmi était là, et bien qu'elle soit elle-même génoise, elle parvient à dépeindre la ville avec le regard d'une « étrangère ». Ainsi dans ses photographies, on retrouve le souffle du port, les ruelles de la vieille ville, les traces de la guerre, le cimetière de Staglieno, mais aussi le quotidien avec les enfants qui jouent dans la rue, les adolescents qui se mettent au rock and roll. , jusqu'à ses célèbres photos de travestis qui firent scandale à l'époque, et qui nous montrent aujourd'hui la grande empathie entre le photographe et le photographié.

Le livre est à la fois une démonstration des recherches photographiques de Lisetta Carmi et un document représentant une Gênes qui n'est plus, et qui ressuscite ici dans son noir et blanc dur. Les textes d'accompagnement sont fournis par Giuliano Scabia, Giovanni Battista Martini et Giovanna Calvenzi.
