Pendant quarante ans, Gianni Berengo Gardin n'a cessé de retourner en Sicile. Faisant fi de tout folklore, il s'est intéressé aux événements religieux, à Pâques, documentant la relation du peuple sicilien avec le sacré. Grand maître de la photographie, il a su saisir à la perfection le lien entre le deuil et la fête, ainsi que celui entre la dévotion et la curiosité, toujours soucieux de contextualiser ses sujets dans l'environnement où se déroulent ces événements. Ses photos, réalisées en immersion dans la foule, rendent directement le sentiment de participation à ces rites à travers le regard curieux d'un photographe produisant des images non pas sur commande mais de sa propre initiative. Les images sont accompagnées des mots de Ferdinando Scianna, un autre maître de la photographie, et de l'anthropologue Franco La Cecla, qui se penche sur les origines de ces rituels.
