Entre 1983 et 1987, le long de la frontière entre la Californie et le Mexique, Ken Light a pris son appareil photo Hasselblad et son flash et a accompagné les agents de la US Border Patrol au milieu de la nuit alors qu'ils ratissaient Otay Mesa à la recherche de "clandestins". Il était là lorsqu'ils ont été appréhendés - capturés par les autorités ainsi que par le flash du photographe. Les images en noir et blanc sont des photos d'identité judiciaire impromptues dans le désert, prises à un moment d'extrême vulnérabilité, lorsque l'espoir a fait place au désespoir, les migrants étant pris dans un jeu cruel de cache-cache.

Les photographies de Ken Light et les souvenirs de José Ángel Navejas, en anglais et en espagnol, témoignent de la traversée nocturne de la frontière par ceux qui cherchent désespérément à avoir une vie meilleure. Un jour après avoir traversé pour la première fois la frontière américaine depuis le Mexique, Navejas a été attrapé et expulsé dans les rues de Tijuana. Sans se laisser décourager, il est retourné en rampant dans un tunnel jusqu'à San Diego, où il est entré aux États-Unis pour toujours.

Avec des mots percutants et des images stroboscopiques prises dans l'obscurité de la nuit, l'immédiateté de Midnight La Frontera souligne la lutte et le défi de celles et ceux qui tentent le périlleux voyage pendant des jours et des semaines à la recherche du rêve américain.
