Yann Arthus-Bertrand s'attache rarement à photographier les villes, mais New York est une exception. Il en aime la folie, la démesure et la transparence lumineuse. Le photographe a su admirablement jouer de la lumière et des angles pour capter des images spectaculaires, insolites et vertigineuses : détails architecturaux perchés aux sommets des gratte-ciel, reflets dansant le long des façades de verre.Ce livre est conçu comme une promenade architecturale le long de l'île de Manhattan, s'arrêtant sur les buildings, monuments ou parcs qui ont fait l'histoire incroyable de cette ville. Un texte de l'historien de l'architecture, John Tauranac, dévoile les charmes et secrets architecturaux que renferme chacun de ces ouvrages d'art.La ville a perdu, en septembre 2001, ses deux plus hauts buildings et a ainsi vu son visage métamorphosé. Pourtant les photographies de Yann Arthus-Bertrand (prises en novembre 2009, janvier et mai 2010) présentent une mégalopole qui n'aspire qu'à rebondir et qui ne cesse de se transformer, de nous étonner et de nous faire rêver.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand est depuis toujours passionné par la nature. En 1991, il a fondé l'agence Altitude et en 2005 l'association GoodPlanet.org qui a pour but de promouvoir le développement durable et de sensibiliser le plus grand nombre aux questions écologiques. Le catalogue Goodplanet.org est paru en avril 2008. Il a publié plus de 60 livres, la plupart aux Éditions de la Martinière.Historien de l'architecture new-yorkaise et cartographe réputé, John Tauranac est l'auteur de tous les textes qui accompagnent les photographies de l'ouvrage.
