« À l’occasion d’un pèlerinage entre Tokyo et Abashiri sur l’île d’Hokkaido, j’ai découvert le concept zen du “Mu” qui exprime une notion de vide, souvent associée, en Occident, à quelque chose de négatif. Elle est pourtant pleine de potentiel car le dépouillement est une porte vers la création. »

Pour Paul Cupido, la Lune est un symbole existentiel. Elle recroqueville l’homme dans l’infiniment petit en même temps qu’elle le connecte, par ce rien dont elle a le secret, à l’infiniment grand, en guidant dans la nuit les capitaines des navires et tous les rêveurs. Dans Ursa Major — le nom latin de la Grande Ourse — les reflets de l’astre deviennent une ligne de vie au cœur des ténèbres : le photographe y imagine une histoire hallucinatoire et punk qui se déroule sur l’île de Miyakojima, à Okinawa, régulièrement frappée par des tempêtes et des typhons. Dans la nuit noire d’un décor post-apocalyptique où règne le béton, un couple s’aventure à l’extérieur. L’ombre des démons d’Onibaba, film culte de Kaneto Shindô, plane alors que l’obscurité prend le dessus sur les plages paradisiaques, les mers d’un bleu tropical et les champs de canne à sucre à perte de vue.
