En 1986, paraissait le premier livre Autres Amériques de Sebastião Salgado aux éditions Contrejour, un ensemble de photographies, fruit de nombreux voyages entre 1977 et 1984 qui revisitaient l’Amérique Latine en évoquant la persistance des cultures paysannes et indiennes. La force de conviction des photographies en noir et blanc, leur puissance plastique, la maquette de Lélia Salgado présentant la plupart des images en doubles pages participèrent au succès de ce livre qui reçut le Prix du Premier Livre Photo, fut édité en quatre langues puis épuisé en quelques mois.
Ce livre devenu mythique au fil du temps, est enfin publié à nouveau accompagné des textes originaux de l’époque de Sebastião Salgado, Alan Riding, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester et d’un texte de Claude Nori racontant sa genèse.
Par son œuvre monumentale en noir et blanc sur des projets pensés sur le long terme, par la puissance esthétique de ses photographies, son engagement auprès des populations opprimées et son combat en faveur de la planète, Sebastião Salgado est aujourd’hui le maître incontesté du reportage dans la tradition humaniste.
