Chaque année, en décembre, dans le Dakota du Nord et du Sud, des membres des tribus Lakotas (Sioux), se rassemblent pour réaliser une chevauchée à cheval de 450 km, pendant 15 jours, sous des températures pouvant descendre jusqu’à -20°C. Ils suivent les traces de la tribu du chef Big Foot, dont les 300 membres, principalement des femmes et des enfants, furent massacrés à Wounded Knee le 29 décembre 1890.

À l’heure actuelle, les Lakotas vivent au sein de réserves dans des conditions plus que précaires, maintenus en dépendance par le gouvernement américain. Parqués sur un territoire ingrat au beau milieu d’une des plus grosses puissances mondiales, leur niveau de vie est comparable à celui du tiers-monde. Violence, drogue, alcool, chômage, l’espérance de vie des hommes dans les réserves est de 45 ans. En 2024, certaines familles n’ont toujours pas de sanitaires ni d’accès à l’eau courante.

Et c’est exactement ce que les médias internationaux montrent habituellement des réserves indiennes aux États-Unis, une caricature de la pauvreté. Alors que leur pouvoir de résilience est immense, la puissance de leur spiritualité intacte, et leur fierté invaincue ; un peuple qui a subi les pires abominations de l’histoire mais qui continue à vivre et aller de l’avant, solidaire et fort.

C’est ce que cette série tente de montrer par le biais de cette chevauchée (Omaka Tokatakiya / Future Generations Ride) où, pendant deux semaines, les anciens s’occupent des jeunes, les sortent de leur quotidien, leur apprennent à monter à cheval, à être bienveillants envers eux, mais leur font également côtoyer l’âme et l’histoire de leur nation. Comme ils disent, ce n’est pas une promenade mais une chevauchée spirituelle.
