Au cours de sa longue et louable carrière, Anne Rearick a réalisé des photographies dans des endroits aussi lointains que le Kazakhstan, l’Afrique du Sud et le Pays basque français. Mais à l’été 1989, avant toutes les subventions et bourses (y compris un Guggenheim en 2003), elle était une étudiante de troisième cycle qui n’avait jamais fait de photos loin de chez elle. Cela a changé quand elle se lia à la famille Riddle du comté de Perry dans l’est du Kentucky.
You Will Look To The Mountains, cette première monographie d’Anne Rearick avec l’éditeur Deadbeat Club, est le résultat tant attendu de ses visites aux Appalaches il y a plus de 30 ans en tant que jeune photographe sensible. Sur la couverture du livre, une jeune Amy Riddle aux yeux écarquillés regarde derrière un bouquet de fleurs, comme si elle nous saluait avec charme et pleine de curiosité. Dès qu’elle rencontra les Riddles, Anne Rearick fut bien accueillie dans leur quotidien de vie de famille. De la mise à mort de porcs au tressage des cheveux, en passant par le cimetière familial et des enfants qui jouent, Anne Rearick a capturé des moments candides de réjouissances, de camaraderie et de tradition. Ces images, cependant, sont résolument directes, jamais sentimentalisées. En ce sens, nous voyons l’artiste émergente jeter les bases de la vision humaniste qui anime sa pratique depuis lors.
