Les photographies inédites de cette série ont été prises entre 1880 et la fin des années 1960 aux États-Unis.

Une partie d’entre elles visent à promouvoir des artistes de spectacles ambulants – les minstrels shows –, au cours desquels des Blancs grimés en Noirs incarnent, dans des sketchs musicaux, ces « bons Nègres » dont les Américains apprécient particulièrement la musique (à l’origine du jazz et du blues). Les autres conservent le souvenir d’une fête privée, d’un anniversaire, d’un carnaval où enfants comme adultes s’essaient au même exercice.

Ces images nous questionnent sur l’évolution du regard qu’une certaine Amérique pose sur les Afro-Américains. fAvec d’autant plus de force que leur rendu esthétique est puissant.
