À l'âge de quatre ans, Dave Heath a été abandonné par ses deux parents. À l'âge de quinze ans, il a vécu dans de nombreuses familles d'accueil et, finalement, dans un orphelinat.

En 1947, Dave Heath a vu l'essai photographique de Ralph Crane "Bad Boy's Life" dans le magazine LIFE. Frappé par le succès de ces photos qui évoquaient de manière succincte une expérience commune profondément ressentie, Heath a su qu'il voulait devenir photographe. Grâce à la chambre noire de l'orphelinat, il commence à maîtriser les mécanismes du médium.

Au début des années 1960, travaillant dans les rues des villes du nord-est de l'Amérique, Heath a utilisé les habitants pour capturer des moments individuels dans des compositions étroitement structurées, chargées de l'importance de leur individualité et de la gravité de leur situation.

Concernant sa collection de photographies, voici ce qu'il déclare : "Lorsque j'avais 25 ans, j'avais cinq photos de mon passé, des instantanées de moi et de ma famille d'accueil, et une de ma mère et de mon père, et je les ai déchirées - parce que je voulais me purifier, nettoyer l'arrière-plan de mon système. Et je pense maintenant que je n'aurais pas dû faire cela, parce que j'ai rassemblé toutes ces vieilles photos pour remplacer ces cinq-là. Dans un sens, ces cinq photos se sont transformées en milliers d'autres. D'une certaine manière, c'est comme si j'essayais de recréer, à travers ces vieilles photos, un album de famille pour une famille que je n'ai jamais eue. D'un point de vue simple et émotionnel, c'est ce qui me motive à collectionner ces photos. Et au début, il y avait ce sentiment intense d'essayer de tirer de l'oubli toutes ces personnes, toutes ces images de personnes, qui étaient destinées à disparaître." - Dave Health
