« De mars 1931 à février 1933, Michel Leiris traverse l’Afrique d’Ouest en Est. Il est secrétaire archiviste d’une mission ethnographique dirigée par Marcel Griaule, et, à ce titre, en tient le journal de bord. Publié pour la première fois chez Gallimard en 1934, son carnet de route est devenu un grand livre, L’Afrique fantôme. De mai 1988 à janvier 1990, une photographe, Françoise Huguier, et un écrivain reporter, Michel Cressole, ont repris l’itinéraire de la mission Dajar-Djibouti. A leur tour, ils ont tenu un journal de voyage, l’une avec des images, l’autre avec des mots, mais tous deux en quête de ce « goût du merveilleux » qui, il y a près de soixante ans, amena Leiris au pays des Noirs. »
