En juin 2021, invité par l'artiste Thomas Mailaender dans le cadre de la Résidence Tuba situé au coeur du parc national des Calanques, Julien Berthier s'inspire du paysage : les bateaux, les rochers et la mer. Il récupère une embarcation et l’augmente d’une roche de calanque sculptée dans la même résine que celle de la coque. En adoptant les traits du réel, l’œuvre mise à l’eau devient quasi invisible. Prolongeant son intervention et sa réflexion sur le paysage, la série The Invisible Journey intègre le bateau-rocher dans une série de cartes postales, de la même façon que le bateau réel flottait sur les eaux de Marseille : à la fois visible et invisible. Volontairement low tech, l’acte de Julien Berthier s’écarte de la retouche d’image numérique rendue banale par Photoshop. Des formes du bateau sont découpées manuellement puis collées directement sur les cartes, créant ainsi un petit volume ensuite rehaussé aux feutres et à l’aquarelle. L’invisible se fond étonnamment bien dans son décor malgré une supercherie tout à fait visible et un anachronisme récurrent. Il entreprend ainsi un périple dans des lieux et des époques diverses, accompagnant les récits de voyages d’inconnus. Presque toujours secondaire dans l’image, l’invisible est un prétexte à regarder le monde autour de lui.
