C'est à l'âge de sept ou huit ans que Jacques Henri Lartigue reçoit son premier appareil photo et produit très vite ses propres photographies. Issu d'une famille prospère, Lartigue observe dès l'enfance les rituels sociaux des hautes sphères de la société à travers ses photographies. Son appareil photo Kodak, sorti en 1888, permet au jeune photographe de saisir les détails des membres excentriques de sa famille chez lui, de la parade sociale élaborée au bois de Boulogne, de la plage en Normandie et d'ailleurs. Des images classiques de voitures et de haute couture côtoient des photographies inédites provenant des archives Lartigue. Ces images de la vie familiale du beau-monde et du demi-monde ne sont pas seulement la preuve d'un talent prodigieux, mais offrent également une perspective intime, adolescente du Paris de la Belle-Époque, le monde de Proust, Debussy et des Nabis, avant l'éclatement de la Première Guerre mondiale.
