Le photographe Danois Peter Funch a mené pendant neuf ans sa série photographique 42nd and Vanderbilt en s’imposant des règles très strictes. Réduisant les possibilités infinies que NYC a à offrir à un artiste, P.Funch ramène à la surface les détails contenus dans un fragment de notre routine quotidienne, la courte marche du point A au point B, nous rappelant que la pratique de la photographie en général, et de la photographie de rue en particulier, n'a fait qu'effleurer la surface des possibilités.

Grâce à un classement, à la fois intuitif et scientifique, les schémas et les maniérismes humains, normalement ignorés à la première lecture, deviennent des méditations sur le temps, la mortalité, l'espace public et privé, l'économie et notre moi intérieur. P.Funch utilise une méthode que le romancier et artiste visuel Douglas Coupland décrit avec justesse dans la postface du livre comme "une forme de surveillance plus douce et plus gentille".

Ce qui semble être un diptyque d'une femme dont les images ont été prises à quelques secondes d'intervalle, se transforme peu à peu en une énigme "Trouvez la différence" : de subtiles variations dans la tenue vestimentaire, la coiffure, la lumière et l'ombre apparaissent alors que nous, spectateurs, réalisons, avec étonnement et consternation, que les images ont en fait été prises à plusieurs jours, mois, voire années d'intervalle.
