Il y a cinquante ans, à l’âge de vingt ans, Peter Turnley a été chargé par le Bureau d’Opportunité Économique de Californie d’effectuer un road trip de quatre mois à travers le plus grand État agricole et rural des États-Unis afin de réaliser un documentaire photo sur la classe ouvrière et les pauvres. C’était une époque où la Californie était trop souvent représentée uniquement par l’imagerie stéréotypée de son magnifique littoral, de ses surfeurs, de ses blondes, d’Hollywood, de son ciel ensoleillé et de son glamour.
