Figure exceptionnelle de l'histoire de la photographie, Ishimoto Yatsushiro a su allier l'approche formelle du New Bauhaus de Chicago à la quintessence de l'esthétique japonaise.

Cette alchimie singulière résulte d'une expérience de vie unique : né aux États-Unis de parents japonais, il passe son enfance sur l'île de Shikoku, au sud de l'archipel nippon, avant de partir étudier la photographie auprès des nouveaux maîtres du médium que sont Harry M. Callahan et Aaron Siskind, qui poussent leurs étudiants à photographier autrement le monde : d'apparence très formelles, leurs images résonnent d'une grande puissance émotionnelle. Scènes de rues, portraits d'enfants déguisés pour Halloween, panneaux publicitaires, façades d'immeubles de quartiers populaires... : les images d'Ishimoto témoignent de sa maîtrise du cadrage, de sa perception sensible des textures et des motifs.

Sans pour autant renoncer à un regard critique sur les questions sociales et politiques de son époque, Ishimoto réalise aussi de nombreuses expérimentations visuelles : séries de jambes sur la plage, de voitures enneigées, de portes d'immeubles de Chicago, de feuilles mortes devenues compositions abstraites. Largement considéré comme " étranger " par ses pairs, Ishimoto a permis d'importer une perspective " formaliste " au sein de la scène photographique japonaise de l'époque.

Conçu en étroite collaboration avec le Centre photographique Ishimoto Yasuhiro et coédité avec LE BAL, l'ouvrage présentera environ 180 photographies représentatives des premières décennies de l'oeuvre d'Ishimoto constituée entre Chicago et Tokyo, avec une attention particulière à sa célèbre série sur la villa Katsura.
