Présenté au salon COSMOS, à l’occasion des Rencontres de la photographie d'Arles 2016, cet ouvrage réunit des photographies rares en provenance du monde entier, réalisées entre les années 1890 et les années 1950.

Ce corpus de photographies de la collection Jean-Marie Donat confère une dimension plus vaste au concept de paysage et en approfondit le mystère. Le collectionneur, par un geste de rotation, fait passer le tirage original d’une image de paysage figurative à un visuel abstrait, comme un basculement de réalité.

"Les expériences visuelles de l’espace et notre conscience de celui-ci sont si intimement associées qu’on ne sait ce qui détermine l’un ou ce qui dépend de l’autre ! Des paysages redoublés par le reflet de l’eau, tests de Rorschach fortuits, avouent et provoquent le mystère de la photographie. Si ce que l’on voit est réel, un ensemble d’indices prélevés par un opérateur, il n’en résulte en aucune manière une explication supplémentaire du monde. L’ouvrage possède sa propre logique, énigmatique, parfois inquiétante, mais toujours jubilatoire."

Postface par François Cheval conservateur, commissaire d'exposition et directeur de musée. Il est actuellement directeur du musée Nicéphore Nièpce à Châlon-sur-Saône.
