En mars 2024, Regina Anzenberger s'est rendue en Australie. Depuis son premier voyage sur ce continent en 1989, son œuvre artistique est profondément inspirée par sa nature.

Le dernier jour de son séjour, elle a visité un élevage d'hippocampes. Fondé par un biologiste, cet élevage visait à produire des hippocampes pour le marché chinois et à les protéger dans leur milieu naturel. Malheureusement, le projet a échoué, les prix pratiqués en Asie étant trop élevés. Aujourd'hui, les hippocampes sont vendus à des aquariums du monde entier, et des visites sont organisées sur place. Cette créature ancestrale est rarement observée à l'état sauvage. Il était donc d'autant plus étonnant de constater la présence de milliers d'hippocampes dans de grands aquariums australiens.

« Ce n'est qu'en revoyant les photos qu'elles sont devenues ma source d'inspiration. Je n'avais pas remarqué, au premier abord, le regard intense qu'elles lancent au spectateur hors de l'aquarium. Considérant ces œuvres comme une simple attraction touristique, je les avais mises de côté. » Mais il ne m'a pas fallu longtemps pour que leurs interactions, au sein de la densité de l'aquarium, m'inspirent et me captivent au point de développer une relation de plus en plus forte avec eux. Finalement, j'ai lu deux livres sur les hippocampes et j'ai découvert l'auteure Andrea Grill, à qui j'ai demandé d'écrire davantage sur ces créatures extraordinaires », raconte Regina Anzenberger.

Pourquoi les hippocampes sont en quelque sorte un baromètre des océans, que les mâles portent des œufs, qu'ils adaptent leur couleur à leur environnement et peuvent même changer de sexe en cas d'urgence – Regina Anzenberger a trouvé tout cela fascinant, en plus de l'impression visuelle que lui offrait la masse de ces créatures, à mi-chemin entre l'extraterrestre et la licorne, dans les grands aquariums de la Ferme des Hippocampes.
