En 1955, Robert Frank traversa les États-Unis. Un cow-boy, un homme tatoué faisant sa sieste sur l’herbe d’un parc, la souffrance d’une femme qui vient d’enterrer un proche, un cireur de chaussures, une route, des femmes qui trinquent ; seules quatre-vingt-quatre de ses images furent publiées, en 1958, dans l’indifférence.
Ce livre est depuis devenu un classique de la photographie. Jugé triste, pervers, voire subversif par la presse américaine d’alors, son importance n’a pourtant cessé de croître au fil des années. Les photographes, les critiques et le grand public ont salué en Robert Frank un véritable novateur.
Ce livre n’a rien d’un reportage. Il ne raconte pas le périple d’un homme à travers les États-Unis mais rassemble une suite de notes prises sur le vif, par un écorché vif.
