Cette première édition de Wild Flowers, parue en 1983, a largement été acclamée par la critique et le public. Pendant près de quarante ans, Joel Meyerowitz a entretenu son jardin visuel dans les rues, les parcs et les villes qu'il a visités ou dans lesquelles il a vécu.

Il sort dans la rue, l'œil ouvert et passionné, muni de son appareil photo. Le Leica, aussi rapide qu'un battement de cils, interrompt le temps sans effort, l'arrête et le retient à jamais. Ces promenades ont donné forme à un nouveau territoire, qu'il a commencé à considérer comme un jardin reflétant la variété de ses observations.

Puis, un jour, lors d'un montage, Joel Meyerowitz est tombé sur un corpus de ces photographies de fleurs qu'il avait prises sans faire attention. Il s'est mis à penser qu'il pourrait rassembler plusieurs de ces images sous le thème nominal des "fleurs". C'est ainsi que Wild Flowers est né.
