En 1971, à seulement 26 ans, Alain Keler débarque aux États-Unis pour rejoindre son amour, une Américaine rencontrée lors d’un voyage en Asie. Une valise contenant ses photos sous le bras, il a en tête les images des grands : Cartier-Bresson, Winogrand, Weegee, Strand, Lewis Hine…

Entre deux petits boulots, il photographie avec gourmandise sa ville d’adoption, fait une incursion à Washington lors de la seconde investiture de Richard Nixon, et se trouve au cœur des protestations et des célébrations. Son regard s’aiguise, se confronte à la rue, aux foules, à la vie quotidienne des New-Yorkais, à Coney Island, Manhattan ou Little Italy avec, déjà, la tendresse et l’empathie du regard qu’on lui connaît.

Le vœu le plus cher du jeune Alain est alors de devenir photographe professionnel. Un jour, il décroche un rendez-vous avec John G. Morris, légendaire directeur de la photographie du New York Times, qui lui décoche un « it’s not very exciting » à propos de son travail. Vingt-six ans plus tard, G. Morris l’appellera pour lui annoncer qu’il remporte le Prix W. Eugene Smith, le plus prestigieux prix remis à un photojournaliste. Alain est l’un des seuls Français, avec Gilles Peress en 1984, à en être lauréat.

C’est à la naissance d’une vie de photographe qu'America Americas nous invite, en nous plongeant dans un New York des années 70 aujourd’hui révolu, celui de John Dos Passos, Damon Runyon ou de Martin Scorsese.

America Americas est un trésor retrouvé. Certains négatifs n’ont été développés pour la première fois qu’en mars 2020, pendant le premier confinement, et de nombreuses images sont inédites à ce jour.
