La ville de Provincetown dans le Massachusetts a longtemps été définie par les étrangers comme un havre de paix pour la communauté queer et une escapade pour les artistes. C'est un lieu où les gens sont reconnus pour leur ouverture d'esprit et leur tolérance.

À la fin des années 1970 et au début des années 1980, Joel Meyerowitz y passe tous ses étés. Il déambule au bord de la mer avec un appareil photo 8x10, réalise des portraits exquis et précis des familles, couples, enfants, artistes et autres habitants de cette communauté atypique. Un ensemble de personnages apparaît et réapparaît d'une saison à l'autre sur un fond de mer, de sable et de soleil. Provincetown contient une centaine de portraits, dont la plupart n'ont jamais été publiés auparavant, amenant les spectateurs dans un monde idyllique de personnalités affirmées.
