L’atmosphère est une symphonie. Les notes qui la composent sont faites de bruits, d’odeurs, d’éclairages, de paysages. Comme une symphonie, elle dégage des sensations étranges, d’invisibles caresses qui agissent insidieusement, profondément sur les comportements. Si elle est calme et pastorale, elle invite à la rêverie. Si elle est forte et fantastique, elle réveille, bouscule, perturbe.

Toute sa vie de photographe, Joel Meyerowitz est passé sans cesse de l’une à l’autre. De New York bruyante aux rives douces et embrumées des lumières de Cape Cod. De la fureur rageuse des canyons de la ville verticale au calme plat des longues plages romantiques de la côte Est élégante. Cette rivalité brutale entre deux mondes est son moteur. Un moteur à explosion d’émotions contraires. Tel Van Gogh qui a éprouvé le besoin indicible, vital pour sa création, d’éclairer sa peinture de l’air vrai de la Provence en écoutant le chant des cigales mêlé aux croassements sinistres des corbeaux, Joel a nourri son inspiration des lueurs tamisées de Hopper ou Turner qui inondent Cape Cod. Elles ont lavé son regard des chaos de la street photography. Tout comme, des années plus tard, la Toscane calmera la douleur de sa longue vision wagnérienne des décombres du 11-Septembre. C’est sa mélodie du Cape Cod que présente ce livre.

Ainsi va Meyerowitz, de chaque côté du miroir.
